Anonymous STD Testing – Are GPs, Private Practices or GUM Clinics Best?

Posted under Uncategorized by admin

Is confidentiality one of your biggest concerns when it comes to getting an STD test? Find out which offers the greatest anonymity – GP, GUM clinics or private STD testing…

There should be no stigma about getting an STD test. In fact, if you’re sexually active with more than one partner, it should be part of your regular health check routine.

However – it’s also true that many people are concerned about their confidentiality when it comes to testing. This can be for a range of reasons – from worries about insurance to plain old embarrassment.

So, if anonymity is your concern, what’s the best way to go about getting tested? Let’s take a look at three popular options:

Confidentiality in GP Surgeries

Your GP will treat your medical information in the strictest confidence.

However, although companies are generally not allowed to ask whether someone has had an HIV test, the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988 means it is possible for records to be checked in some insurance, employment or mortgage provision cases.

It’s therefore recommended that if you want to get tested you avoid going to your GP. In any case, it’s unlikely that they will have the full range of tests available and will probably refer you to a GUM clinic.

GUM Clinic Anonymity

First of all – you don’t have to be referred by your GP to visit a GUM clinic, and you don’t need to give your real name while there. Also, any information about the test won’t be passed on to your GP.

Obviously, this gives you some protection over your confidentiality.

However, there are several other reasons why GUM clinics may not offer the most anonymity.

GUM clinics are run by the NHS. While many are very well managed, you may find that it takes a long time to get seen, particularly in large cities. Some offer a walk-in STD testing service, but often you will have to wait several hours before being tested.

Furthermore, opening times are often inconvenient – making it harder to make a swift visit during lunch breaks or after work, for example. Similarly, you may find that GUM clinics have a less discreet location and setting.

So what’s a more discreet option?

Anonymous Testing in Private Clinics

Unlike GP medical records, all information provided to private clinics is governed by different legislation – the Data Protection Act. That means that insurance companies and suchlike cannot access the details.

When compared to GUM clinics, private practices also offer a distinct advantage. You can often book an appointment outside of working hours, or on a Saturday. Those that offer a walk-in service may be able to get you tested within half an hour (making it easier for you to visit at the last minute when you get the chance). Similarly, the location and environment will be more secure and confidential.

Overall, if anonymity is one of your biggest concerns when it comes to STD and HIV testing, then a private STD clinic may be your best option.
